The concept for this project was a vampire themed patisserie based in New Orleans. It follows the scrapbook of Lottie, who lived many lives as an old vampire, putting a spin on the typical Dracula theme.
Because Lottie is a vampire, she doesn’t show up in photographs, so to express herself in the scrapbook she uses cutout silhouettes, doodles, and writings. These elements were carefully created to emulate the handcrafted and precious entity of a scrapbook.
This personalized feeling was to make blood donation more approachable for those giving blood and those volunteering, because it is important for the health care field.
Just like a grandmother spoils her grandbabies, Lottie provides a little something extra for those helping others. After all, a vampire knows how important blood can be.
The project goal was to design a cookbook and menu system that supports a community outreach program. I chose to partner with the American Red Cross Blood Bank and went with a new take on a vampire-themed restaurant.
So many restaurants are already vampire-themed, so I wanted a slightly different take for this one. I made the character Evalyn who is a grandma type vampire, who helps put people at ease with some good food. It also helps influence the aesthetics for this design.
I wrote some key words to help frame the feeling I wanted this project to give off.
Based on that I made a mood board for inspiration.
Next, I made a mind map and tried to come up with some fitting names for this establishment. I ended up going with Vampire Bites because it establishes the concept while referencing food. It hints towards the community outreach of the blood bank as well, because a vampire's bite leads to blood.
I made a lot of possible logos, but after critique, I ended up choosing number 60.
I made layout sketches that I referenced for both the menu system and cookbook. It helped get a variety of layouts, without feeling disjointed.
After critique, I went with the first cover iteration. It felt the most cohesive and together.
I did a few different color studies but ended up enjoying the first iteration. I did rearrange the type and logo to feel more balanced.
I did a lot of type studies that could emulate her writing but also included more legible type to match the specifics of each recipe.
I tinkered with the layouts of each page trying to find the right placement and balance between decoration and functionality.
Since vampires can't show up in photography I had to figure out different ways to show our vampire grandma's presence in the deliverables. I chose organic type and included notes from Evalyn. She would doodle in her scrapbook as well as cut herself into photographs and include coffee stains.
